Young Voices

YOUNG VOICES is a series of workshops for middle and high school students looking to further enhance their experience in theatre. Participants will select a monologue from a catalog provided by Nashville Rep to be coached by professional teaching artists. This catalog is composed of BIPOC American playwrights, as the program is aimed at giving these overlooked voices a venue to be heard. Our teaching artists have not only graced the Rep stages, showcased their talents on Broadway, made appearances in feature films and television series, and countless other stages.

YOUNG VOICES is fully sponsored and each participating group receives a donation to their classroom for participating in the program. For the initial visit, Nashville Rep sends the teaching artists to coach the participants on Memorization, Creativity, Effectiveness, and Showmanship. They will be given 3 - 5 minutes to work with each participant on their selected piece. At the follow-up visit, participants will perform their pieces and those who score the highest in the above categories will be selected as a finalist. Those finalist will receive award and recognition, an invitation to the monologue masterclass, and have the chance to compete at the public presentation for additional scholarships up to $750.

Nashville Rep is dedicated to fostering a greater understanding and awareness of equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility. Increasing arts accessibility is one of the many values we set out to achieve here at Nashville Rep and YOUNG VOICES is one way we accomplish that goal.

Want to become a supporter of this and other theatre education programs from Nashville Rep? Please make a donation and/or take the time to join us at the FREE Public Presentation on September 24th, 2023 at 3:00pm at James Lawson High School where our YOUNG VOICES finalist from all over the city will perform their piece.

Building Community through Theatre at Johnson Alternative Learning Center

Developed to counteract the negative impact of exclusionary discipline practices upon youth in Metro Nashville, the trauma-informed curriculum challenges students with the study of theatrical texts from BIPOC playwrights which allow students to explore their own identities, share common experiences to build trust, and use creativity, communication and collaboration to build confidence.

Student Internships

Nashville Repertory Theatre provides a variety of opportunities for students interested in studying theatre as an intern in a professional environment. Student Internships can be tailored to each individual based on experience and interests. Credit hours can be available, depending on school policies. Though schedules can be flexible, applicants will be expected to commit to the schedule mutually agreed to when the internship is created. This may include either daytime or evening hours, depending on the nature of the internship and the needs of the job taken on by the intern. Please note that internships are limited during the summer when Nashville Rep is typically not in production.

Applications for Student Internship positions are currently on hold. Please check back later for more information.

DEVELOPMENT
Development Student Interns will work alongside the Director of Development and will have the opportunity to learn about how theatres raise money. This could include assisting with donor relations and/or helping with special events & fundraising during the season. Internships in this area are ideal for students who are highly organized and able to multi-task with excellent computer and writing skills. Responsibilities could include assisting with planning, promotion, and staffing of educational/outreach activities and promotional events, preparing and assembling direct mailings, and other clerical duties as needed.

COSTUMES
Costume Student Interns will learn about the daily operations of a professional costume shop creating the costumes for Nashville Rep productions and the skills related to that, under the supervision of the Costume Manager and the Costume Rentals Manager. Costume shop jobs can vary according to skill level, schedule and seasonal needs, but a minimum of six work hours per week is preferred. Students may have responsibilities that give them experience in hand sewing; machine stitching; research, shopping, and pulling from stock; maintaining a shop and laundry; and more.

SCENIC
Interns in this department will learn the various workings of a professional scene shop and the skills related to building the sets for Nashville Rep productions. Jobs will vary based on skill level and availability, and will be supervised by the Technical Director. Students will learn how to work in a cooperative team environment, and responsibilities may include assisting in the construction and painting of sets, general shop maintenance, and loading in and striking sets. Scenic work is physical, and interns must be able to lift and move heavy objects. Applicants who can be available to work prior to tech week and after closing night, and have some general shop experience will be given preference.

ARTISTIC
Internships in this department are for students who want to learn about directing, or playwriting and dramaturgy, or designing for the theatre. Students may be given assignments working on a production, or with our Ingram New Works Project. This internship is highly individualized, and may include the opportunity to observe and work alongside professionals in the area of the student’s interest. Depending on the assignment, supervisors may be the Artistic Director, a designer, or the Artistic Associate. (Note: Occasionally a performance student internship is available, but this varies from season to season and includes an audition process.)

MARKETING
Interns in this department will learn non-profit marketing in a highly competitive arts community alongside the Director of Marketing. Jobs will be assigned according to skill, area of interest, and schedule of availability. Interns in this department may be given the opportunity to tackle an independent marketing project to complete as a part of their educational experience. Possible additional duties could include collecting and archiving materials, assisting in preparation of promotional materials for each production, executing social media marketing plans, and other duties as needed and according to the intern’s interests.

PROPERTIES
An intern in the Properties department will learn skills that will help provide each Nashville Rep production with all of its prop needs, working under the mentorship of the Properties Master and Rentals Manager. This is an ideal internship for students who are crafty, good with tools, and enjoy research and making things with attention to detail. Applicants with general scene shop experience and/or a basic knowledge of tools are preferred. Interns will work in props construction and painting, props pulling, and assisting with maintenance of props shop and storage.

PRODUCTION
Internships in this department are for those who want to learn about stage management and how to work on a run crew or wardrobe crew backstage during Nashville Rep performances. Interns will have the opportunity to come to rehearsals and work with an Equity stage manager to become familiar with the production process. They will have the chance to observe professional directors and actors at work and may be allowed to attend production meetings. All jobs in this department are supervised by a show’s Stage Manager. Note that this internship often requires a commitment of multiple weeks, depending on how long a show is running, and applicants interested in run crews for shows must be available to work all tech rehearsals and performances. Please check performance schedule before expressing interest in working a particular show.
